You wrote a good prompt, got a good image, and then discovered it doesn't fit anywhere: cropped to a stranger's forehead as a phone wallpaper, letterboxed on your desktop, awkwardly squeezed as a banner. Aspect ratio is the setting most people leave on default and the one that most often ruins an otherwise usable generation — because unlike style or lighting, you can't fix it afterward without cutting away part of the image.

What does aspect ratio actually change?

Aspect ratio is the shape of the canvas — width relative to height. A 1:1 image is square; 16:9 is wide like a monitor; 9:16 is tall like a phone. The non-obvious part: the model doesn't paint the same picture on a differently shaped canvas. It composes for the shape.

Ask for "a samurai standing in a bamboo forest" at 9:16 and you'll typically get a full-body character shot with the forest towering above. The same prompt at 16:9 produces a cinematic scene — samurai off-center, forest stretching horizontally, empty space that reads as atmosphere. At 1:1 you'll usually get a tighter, centered composition, closer to a portrait. Choosing a ratio is choosing a genre of composition before the model reads a single other word.

This means ratio should match your prompt's intent, not just your output target. Vertical formats favor standing characters, portraits, and towering scenes. Horizontal formats favor landscapes, group shots, and anything cinematic. Square splits the difference and centers the subject.

Which ratio should you pick for each use?

The practical map, from the ratios available in the image generator:

1:1 (square). Profile pictures, Discord and Twitch emotes, album art, Instagram grid posts. If the face or subject needs to sit dead center and survive being displayed tiny, square is the safe call.

9:16 (vertical). Phone wallpapers, TikTok and Reels backdrops, Instagram Stories, pin-style posts. Also the natural shape for full-body character art — a standing figure fits a tall canvas without wasted space.

16:9 (horizontal). Desktop wallpapers, YouTube thumbnails, Twitter/X headers, any scene meant to feel like a film frame. If your prompt contains a landscape, a skyline, or the word "cinematic," this is almost always the right shape.

4:3 and 3:4. The in-between formats: 4:3 suits classic screen proportions and cozy interior scenes; 3:4 is the traditional portrait-print shape and frames head-and-shoulders portraits more naturally than the extreme stretch of 9:16.

If you need one image for several destinations, generate at the widest ratio the composition tolerates and crop down — cropping a 16:9 scene to square usually works, while stretching a square image to 16:9 is impossible without regenerating.

Why do wallpapers need special care?

Wallpapers are the highest-stakes ratio decision because the display size is fixed and unforgiving — a desktop is 16:9 and a phone is roughly 9:16, and content near the edges gets covered by icons, clocks, and camera notches. The working rule is to compose with a protected center: keep the subject in the middle 60% of the frame and let the outer edges carry sky, bokeh, or scenery that survives being covered. Does aspect ratio matter for video too?

More, not less. With images, a wrong ratio costs you a crop; with video, the platforms are strict about orientation and re-generating costs more. Two shapes cover almost everything in the video generator: 16:9 for YouTube and anything landscape, 9:16 for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts.

Orientation also interacts with motion. Horizontal frames give pans and lateral character movement room to breathe; vertical frames suit slow push-ins on a character, falling elements like rain or petals, and upward reveals. A prompt like "camera slowly pans across the city" fights a 9:16 canvas — there's nowhere to pan to. Match the motion to the shape and the model stops producing awkward, cramped movement.

Is a bigger resolution always better?

Resolution and ratio are separate dials. Ratio is shape; resolution is pixel count within that shape. Generate at the highest resolution you'll realistically need — you can downscale losslessly but upscaling invents detail — while remembering that a 4K image at the wrong ratio is still the wrong image. Shape first, size second.

Stop letting the default decide

Before your next generation, answer one question: where will this image live? That answer picks the ratio, the ratio shapes the composition, and the composition is half of what makes a result feel intentional. Open the playground, set the ratio before you write the prompt, and write for the shape you chose — tall prompts for tall canvases, wide scenes for wide ones.
